Townsend Street Presbyterian Church is a Grade B1 Listed Building (HB26/50/169) that was designed by architects Young & Mackenzie and constructed between 1860 and 1879 as part of the church complex constructed by William McCammond of Antrim Road, Belfast. Townsend Street Presbyterian Church was constructed to replace an earlier meeting house that had stood on the site since 1833. The current building opened its doors on the 13th October 1878 and was listed in 1985. The church ceased to provide services on 18th September 2022 due to declining attendance numbers.  

In September 2010, the Townsend Street Presbyterian Church submitted a a planning application (Z/2010/1234/F) proposing new external ramps for level access, internal accessible toilet and lift facility. This application was approved in June 2011. The refurbishment works for these alterations took place in 2015 which helped improve the building accessibility and the church inclusiveness.

Due to dwindling numbers, the Townsend Street Presbyterian Church is now in need of a new use that will keep it occupied and in operational into the future. The Ulster Orchestra has since became the new tenant of the Old School House and main church building.

In August 2022, Ulster Orchestra submitted a planning application (LA04/2022/1555/F) proposing change of use from Place of Worship to use a Concert Rehearsal Hall for the Ulster Orchestra. This application was approved in September 2023.

In August 2024, Ulster Orchestra required necessary funding to begin restoration works. Ulster Orchestra's restoration project of Townsend Street Presbyterian Church is supported by funding from the Foyle Foundation, the National Lottery Heritage Fund, Ulster Garden Villages, Dormant Accounts Fund NI, the Department for Communities, the Arts Council of Northern Ireland, and Belfast City Council. The site will be restored over the next two years.
