About City Quays Gardens
The City Quays Gardens development is a public realm improvement project currently under construction by Belfast Harbour. The development is situated in Corporation Square, Belfast, Northern Ireland, encompassing land east of the Harbour Office and west of City Quays 3.
The site previously functioned as a surface car park. As part of Phase 1 of the City Quays Gardens project, this car park is to be relocated to the City Quays Multi-Storey Car Park (MSCP). The area is currently being transformed into a 'maritime urban park' spanning approximately 2 acres, aiming to create a new destination green space in Belfast's harbour area.
In December 2021, Belfast Harbour Commissioners submitted a planning application (LA04/2022/0262/F) proposing the first phase of City Quays Gardens which aims to create formal garden areas featuring distinctive elements such as 'gateway nest' and 'swinging seat' installations, seating arrangements, an artwork trail, lawn spaces, shared pedestrian and access routes, public plazas, and a promenade along Clarendon Dock. Additional enhancements include the improvement and widening of footpaths at Corporation Square, extension of taxi bays, relocation of Belfast Bike stations and bicycle shelters, realignment of the road, and relocation of listed railings fronting Corporation Square. This application was approved in March 2023.
City Quays Gardens is phase 1 of a wider masterplan. There is currently 3 more phases planned:
Phase 2: Clarendon Dockyard
Phase 3: Cross Harbour Park
Phase 4: Ritchie's Park
This initiative is part of Belfast Harbour's broader City Quays masterplan, which includes developments like City Quays 3—a 16-storey office building offering 250,000 sq ft of office space—and the proposed City Quays 4, a 256-apartment build-to-rent residential development.
In April 2024, site preparation took place on site, with construction well underway as of March 2025.
City Quays Gardens officially opened to the public on 28th April 2025.
