About Castle Buildings
Castle Buildings is located at 10-16 Castle Place. Castle Place takes its name from the great house built by Sir Arthur Chichester around which the town developed in the seventeenth century. 10-18 Castle Place was first constructed by Blackwood and Jury in 1904-1905 and later extended in 1907 by McLaughlin and Harvey builders. The building gains its current name as it is erected on part of the site of the 17th Century Belfast Castle.
The current site has temporary retail let on the ground floor whilst the 1st - 4th floors are vacant. The building is a category B1 listed building and is afforded statutory protection under the Planning Act (NI) 2011.
In February 2019, Alterity Investments submitted a planning application (LA04/2019/0405/F) seeking change of use from existing retail unit to financial services A2 use on ground & first floors and the conversion of the second and third floor to 6 apartments. The second & third floors of the building will have 3 apartments each. This application was approved in January 2020.
In December 2020, Alterity Investments submitted another planning application (LA04/2021/0052/F) seeking to provide retail on the ground floor and change of use of first floor from retail to 3 no. 1 bedroom apartments. Each of the proposed apartments will consist of living/ dining space with one bedroom & bathroom facilities. The bedrooms will be designed to have a view onto Castle Place with a large glass window within the room. The ground floor shop front is to be replaced with a new aluminium shop front with sliding doors. This application was approved by Belfast City Council in April 2022.
In December 2022, Alterity Investments Ltd submitted a planning application (LA04/2022/2219/F) seeking to change the use of the approved and largely complete apartments to serviced apartments for short-term letting mainly but not exclusively to the tourist and business markets. This application was approved in March 2023.
In March 2023, it was announced that Ann Summers would opening a new store in Castle Buildings. They would be occupying a unit which previously housed Mothercare. A spokesperson for Ann Summers that their current city centre location on Rosemary Street would be closing on 15th April with the new site expected to open on 20th April.

Studio Ulster, also known as Belfast Harbour Studios Phase 2 is a proposed development comprising of purpose built, film studios and sound stages, dedicated workshops and film production support accommodation. The site is located within the Giant’s Park and sits immediately adjacent to Belfast Lough, and south of the previous Phase 1 development. Belfast Harbour Studios Phase 1 was granted planning permission on 25 February 2016 (LA04/2015/1605/F) and the facility was completed in May 2018.
