About Education Authority Belfast HQ

Education Authority Headquarters Belfast is a four storey building of masonry construction and was built between 1899 and 1901. The building was designed by Samuel Stevenson it was constructed as a warehouse for Kirker, Greer and Company who manufactured aerated water. A Methodist meeting house formed part of the site in the mid-19th century. By 1917 the premises were managed by the distillers Brown, Corbett and Company, and in war-time the building was used as the Air Raid Precautions (ARP) headquarters. It has been home to the Belfast Education & Library Board since 1947 and gained listed building status in 2014.

The building is the main Education Authority Headquarter centre containing the current Chairperson, Chief Executive, Directors offices and a number of AD Offices. A number of EA directorate services, Operations and Estates, CYPS, Finance & IT, Human Resources, etc. operate out of this building. Approximately 272 employees work in the main building.  

In May 2019, Education Authority submitted a planning application (LA04/2019/1245/LBC) proposing the refurbishment of the main reception and 1 stop shop taking in flooring, decoration, and replacement suspended ceiling. The application also proposed to replace the existing side entrance aluminium doors with a aluminium window system. This application was refused in September 2019.

In July 2022, Education Authorityu submitted a planning application (LA04/2022/1504/LBC) proposing the refurbishment of main reception including flooring, decoration and replacement suspended ceiling; replacement of side entrance aluminum door with aluminum window. The refurbishment will take place in three phases:

  • Phase 1A - Reception refurbishment including the replacement of the carpet flooring, the total replacement of suspended ceiling grid and tiles. Upgrading of the lighting to current regulations, redecoration, and provision of new reception desk

  • Phase 1B - Introduction of hot desking area

  • Phase 1C - Upgrade of the open office area achieved by upgrading the flooring, recarpet the room and fit new suspended ceilings & associated lighting upgrade. New staff workstations will also be provisioned and new meeting rooms will be provisioned.

This application was approved in September 2022.
