About Aster House

Aster House is an under construction student accommodation development that is located on a rectangular plot of 0.3 ha (known as Botanic Link) which connects University Road in the west to Botanic Avenue in the east. Historically the site contained the railway line which extended from Botanic Station to the east. In 1999/2000 the railway line was relocated below ground and the site has been vacant since.


In March 1994, a planning application was submitted (Z/1994/0225) proposing the construction of an office and retail development with car parking which was later approved.


During July - August 1999, Farrans Construction built a concrete culvert on the site which covered the railway line. In September 1999, a planning application was submitted (Z/1999/2896/F) proposing the construction of a 8 storey building comprising of 83 apartments and 100 parking spaces with offices/ retail at both street frontages. This application was later withdrawn.


In August 2000, a planning application was submitted (Z/2000/2060/F) proposing the construction of 6 storey building comprising of 66 apartments and 97 parking spaces with offices / retail at both street frontages. This application was approved in March 2002.


In August 2001, a planning application was submitted (Z/2001/2012/F) proposing a car park for 79 car spaces on the Botanic Link site. This application was approved in November 2001.


In March 2018, Oxford Street Capital Limited submitted a Proposal of Application Notice (PAN) (LA04/2018/0678/PAN) proposing a multi-storey office development. This PAN was considered acceptable.


In June 2018, Botanic Link Ltd submitted a Proposal of Application Notice (PAN) (LA04/2018/1481/PAN) proposing the construction of purpose built managed student accommodation (PBMSA) comprising approximately 252 cluster beds & 21 studio flats, communal facilities and ground floor retail. This PAN was considered acceptable.


In February 2019, Botanic Link Ltd submitted a planning application (LA04/2019/0417/F) proposing the construction of purpose built managed student accommodation (PBMSA) with 253 beds comprised of 220 cluster beds & 33 studio flats, communal facilities and a retail/café unit fronting Botanic Avenue. This application was approved in June 2019.


In December 2019, Farrans Construction commenced construction of Aster House with works aimed to be completed in 2022. The Aster House scheme is part of the Novel Student accommodation group. 


In August 2022, CASL Botanic Gardens submitted a planning application (LA04/2022/1488/F) proposing the installation of CCTV cameras to the building elevations of Aster House.
