About Common Market

Common Market, located at 16-20 Dunbar Street, is an entertainment venue/events space which includes a street food market. The Common Market site consists of an 882sqm 2 storey warehouse building, previously occupied by Arnott’s fruit and veg wholesalers.

In December 2018, The Limelight Belfast Ltd submitted a planning application (LA04/2018/2903/F) proposing change of use of warehouse and offices to event space including internal and external alterations. This application was approved in February 2020.

Common Market opened to the public on the 23rd July 2021 with a number of vendors including Hey Chick, Oui Poutine, Ball & Roll, Al Pastor Mexican Street Food and Baps By Freight.

In August 2021, Carlisle Inns Ltd submitted a planning application (LA04/2021/2095/F) proposing change of use from warehouse and offices to a public house (connected to the existing adjacent public house) and entertainment venue/events space, including a street food market for on-premises consumption (partly retrospective). This application was approved in April 2022.

Common Market also sought to increase its capacity by over 1,000 to approximately 1,260 and extend its opening hours from 1am to 3am for certain events. Carlisle Inns Limited, is also the licensee for the licensed premises adjacent to Common Market, 39 Gordon Street and Lux. The council noted "The applicant’s existing premises, 39 Gordon Street and Lux, which adjoins this venue, currently holds a 3am entertainments licence and this increase in operating hours would allow both venues to operate in harmony, allow the licensee to manage crowd control better, and improve their safety management protocols”.

In November 2022, Conway Estates Ltd submitted a planning application (LA04/2022/2068/F) proposing Change of use from a previous warehouse/office building (currently operating as an entertainment venue/events space under temporary approval LA04/2021/2095/F) to a temporary short-stay car park on the ground floor, with vehicular access via Dunbar Street. This resulted in a outcry and the creation of a campaign to save Common Market which received considerable public interest. This application was withdrawn in July 2023.

In May 2024, Carlisle Inns Ltd submitted a planning application (LA04/2024/0852/F) proposing the retention of use from warehouse and offices to a public house (linked to the adjacent public house) and entertainment venue/events space, including a street food market for on-premises consumption.
